Forever – Watch It Online Now

The first episode of Forever, coming this fall on ABC is available on-line now at the ABC site (and we are hearing some cable/video-on-demand boxes have it), and is well worth the time to check out… or you could be patient, and wait until it premiers, on your television, Tuesday Sept. 23.

This is a show that caught my eye at San Diego’s Comic-Con International with an interesting trailer at the ABC booth, and the first episode lived up to my hopes.  It fulfills the promises, introducing us to the main characters and giving us a sufficient idea of how they are connected to one another, and just enough back story on the key players to make them interesting, and prompt me to want to come back next week and find out more.  I’ll concede there was at least one moment where I groaned and wondered why they chose to open that door and head down that path… but since I have no idea what is ahead, or where we are going, that simply leaves me wondering where the path I would not have chosen will take us, and if I will be satisfied when we reach the end of it, or if I will wish we had taken a path less traveled.

Forever stars: Ioan Gruffudd (Ringer, Fantastic 4), Judd Hirsch (Taxi, Numb3rs), Alana De La Garza (Law and Order, Do No Harm), and Joel David Moore (Bones, Avatar), all of whom are familiar faces with a large body of work between them, and they come together with some very nice performances, honestly, when you pull together such an evenly matched cast, how is one to choose a stand out?  Instead it would be fair to say they continually bring out the best in one another.

With flavors of previous characters visible you can easily understand why these actors came to mind when the show was being cast, and yet already it appears they will be playing different characters than we have seen them in before, simply with a similar foundation and core, I felt subtle differences even in this first episode (perhaps in part because I was watching the screen, watching to see if they were there or not), again making me curious to see what future episodes have in store for the audience.

This is a great trailer for the show, but be warned, it draws heavily on the first episode to pitch the show, that said, I really do love how it sells Forever.

Stand Up To Cancer 2014

The Stand Up To Cancer press release says so well what they are about, and what is going on tonight.  Normally we avoid the copy and paste approach with press releases… but in this case, the details matter too much, and we want to get it exactly right.

 Friday, September 5th (8:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT) Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), will stage its fourth biennial fundraising event.  Robert Downey Jr., Melissa McCarthy, Steve Carell, Sofia Vergara, Ben Falcone, Kevin Bacon, Anna Kendrick, Tony Goldwyn, Dave Grohl, Hailee Steinfeld, Josh Gad, Giada De Laurentiis, Jaime King, Mira Sorvino, Joe Manganiello, Jordana Brewster, Alison Sweeney, Amanda de Cadenet, Charlie Wilson, and Diem Brown, will be part of the star-studded appeal to help build public support for SU2C’s groundbreaking translational research that can provide patients with new therapies to save lives now. They join previously announced participants including Gwyneth Paltrow, Katie Couric, Reese Witherspoon, Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Jon Hamm, Kiefer Sutherland, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Mark Harmon, Rob Lowe, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Tony Hale, Dane Cook, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Marg Helgenberger, Matt Passmore, Rob Riggle, Italia Ricci, Ethan Zohn and Bree Turner. Special musical performances include: The Who, Jennifer Hudson, Lupe Fiasco & Common, Ariana Grande, and Dave Matthews Band.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Joel Gallen of Tenth Planet Productions will co-executive produce the September 5th broadcast, live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.  ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, along with ABC Family, American Forces Network, AXS TV, Bravo, Cooking Channel, Discovery Fit & Health, E!, Encore, Encore Espanol, EPIX, ESPNEWS, FOX Sports 2, FXM, HBO, HBO Latino, ION Television, LMN, Logo TV, MLB Network, National Geographic Channel, Oxygen, Palladia, Pivot, SHOWTIME, Smithsonian Channel, Starz, TNT and VH1 are donating one hour of simultaneous commercial-free primetime for the nationally televised fundraising special on Friday. In addition, the show will stream live on both Hulu and Yahoo.

Instead of the traditional phone bank staffed by celebrities, the September 5th telecast will feature a “digital lounge” on the set, hosted by Yahoo News Global Anchor Katie Couric. Stars in the digital lounge will reach out to viewers via phone, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms through an exciting new campaign called “We’re Calling You” that SU2C’s supporters can sign up for at werecallingyou.org.

In the on-stage digital lounge, Katie Couric will tap into the Facebook Mentions Box, which allows supporters to share their connection to cancer and receive real-time responses from celebrities. Other celebrities in the digital lounge will participate in Facebook Q&As, using their own pages to respond live to fan questions.  Facebook and Instagram will also have a presence on the star-studded red carpet on September 5th with a photo experience that will capture the stars as they make their way into the Dolby Theatre, sharing those images and videos with fans. In addition to Facebook, an array of digital and social media platforms and influencers— ranging from Shazam, reddit, Nerdist, Tumblr, Yahoo, Hulu, AOL, and The Huffington Post— are helping support SU2C this year.

For the first time, there will be a Canada-inclusive co-broadcast of the 2014 telecast, which will air simultaneously on all four major English-language Canadian networks: CBC, City, CTV and Global, along with Canadian services AMI, CHCH, CHEK, Fight Network, Gusto TV, Hollywood Suite and TLN. All funds received from the Canadian general public during the broadcast will be directed towards the creation of collaborative research teams, as well as education and awareness programs conducted in Canada.

The first three SU2C telecasts took place on September 5, 2008, September 10, 2010 and September 7, 2012, and were made available to more than 190 countries. To date, more than $261 million has been pledged to support SU2C’s innovative cancer research programs. Since 2008, SU2C has funded 12 “Dream Teams” of researchers and two translational research teams, as well as 26 young innovative scientists whose high-risk, potentially high-reward projects are aimed at ending cancer’s reign as a leading cause of death worldwide.

There are times when it seems competition and the free market reign supreme, but Stand Up To Cancer is a prime example of an industry pulling together as one united force in opposition to something that touches lives daily throughout the world.  As they say on the StandUpToCancer website:

1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes. We can change these odds.

One of the great joys of San Diego’s Comic Con International is discovering new television shows, new books, new… things you simply did not know were out there, or were coming out, but catch your eye, spark your imagination, and capture some part of your mind and make you wonder just what the creative forces behind it have in store for you.

While I waited for my turn to get an autograph from the cast of Resurrection I saw a trailer for the show Forever and I had one of those moments.  The discovery of a show I knew nothing about, and yet suddenly I was curious.  In thirty seconds, perhaps 60, they told me just enough to want to know more, to want to tune in for an hour and find out just who are these characters and what kind of trouble are they going to get into — and back out of!

I was five people from the end of the line for the Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. autograph session.  That autograph signing was, by far, one of my San Diego Comic-Con International highlights for 2014, and I am not just saying that because each of the kind ladies in the cast gave me a high-five (as did Jeph Loeb.)

By rights the cast could have been tired, and noticing that their session was about to end. They could have been shifting their focus to the fact they were about to move on to whatever came next, especially since it was approaching lunch time and often these events are so tightly scheduled for talent that they have a hard time finding a chance to sit down for a meal.

If the cast was feeling any of those things, you wouldn’t have guessed it to meet them and talk to them.  They gave every person who came through a bright smile, their full attention, and from first person to last made having stood in line for that moment of their time a highlight of San Diego’s Comic-Con International.  When you were in front of them you had no doubt that every ounce of their attention was devoted to you, and thanking you for tuning in every week to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But when they were done with the line they did not simply get up and walk away, instead they came down the few steps to where the crowd waited, and signed autographs for fans in wheel chairs.

Ask me to describe the cast of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Class Act comes to mind.

(And for those who love the Marvel Universe, I just have to mention, the Winter Soldier was the last person in line!)
